With a rock-and-roll look inspired by Joan Jett, Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen has moved on from her preppy Upper-East-Sider look to a downtown, rock star-chic style. Our latest cover girl always dons kohl-rimmed eyes and a shaggy haircut, so we’ve asked her hairstylist Fred Vandebunt and her makeup artists Tina Turnbow and Beau Nelson how you can recreate her rock-star look at home!
Celebrity hair stylist Fred Vandebunt says: “Taylor has beautiful hair. It’s fine, but she has a lot, so it works really well and you can do anything you want with it.” When asked what his favorite products to use on her hair are, Fred says, ” I don’t actually use a lot of product! I style it with heat and let it cool down to set it. Too many people think they need to style hair with product, and lots of it. For Taylor, I sometimes put a little Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray on the roots to give it a little lift, seal the ends with some silicone, and I might use some Elnett Hairspray to keep it all together.” On creating with her new edgy haircut, Fred explains he “was working with Taylor on a shoot and she wanted to cut her hair short. She wanted a ‘Runaways’ look and I just put my modern edge to it. She was kind of freaking out because I cut it really short on top, but the next day she loved it!” As far as styling tools he uses on Taylor’s hair, Fred likes a “blow-dryer, round brush, curling irons, wave iron, straightener, and hands.” Finally, I asked Fred what a girl should ask her stylist for if she wants a rock-and-roll hair cut like Taylor’s, he suggested: “bring pictures!! A picture says more than a two-hour conversation. That still doesn’t make it a rocker haircut though. You need to style it as a rocker too.”
